The Saharan Series

The central Saharan regions of Ahaggar and Tassili-n-Ajjer, or Algeria’s ‘Deep South’ as they are sometimes known, as well as the Fezzan region of Libya, contain some of the world’s most spectacular desert scenery – and some of its strangest secrets.

Access to Algeria is not easy and filming in the country is almost impossible. However, in 2005, Jeremy Keenan (the Presenter and Co-Producer) of the series, in partnership with A & AB Productions, made a determined effort to convince the Algerian Government that the country’s impressive heritage should be filmed for the first time. It was an arduous expedition but a successful one. Encouraged by this success, in 2006 Keenan and the production company decided to extend the series to include Libya. Again, after intensive negotiations, permission was finally given to film in Libya, making them the first documentary team allowed into the country after Libya’s rehabilitation and the removal of UN sanctions. The result was four stunning documentaries of hitherto unseen beauty, together with a number of secrets revealed for the first time.
